Is It Worth Repairing My Appliance?
The repair vs. replace decision — made simple
The 50% Rule
Repair if the cost is less than 50% of the appliance's current replacement value AND the appliance is less than halfway through its expected lifespan. If both conditions are true, repair is almost always the right financial choice.
Repair vs. Replace by Appliance
| Appliance | Lifespan | Repair if under |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 10–15 years | 7 years old |
| Washing Machine | 10–12 years | 6 years old |
| Dryer | 10–13 years | 6 years old |
| Dishwasher | 9–12 years | 6 years old |
| Oven / Range | 13–15 years | 8 years old |
| Microwave | 9–10 years | 5 years old |
When to Always Replace
- ×The appliance is past its expected lifespan AND needs a major repair
- ×Repair cost exceeds 50% of replacement cost
- ×The same component has failed more than once in 2 years
- ×Repair parts are discontinued or unavailable
When to Always Repair
- Appliance is under 5 years old — almost always worth repairing
- Still under manufacturer or extended warranty
- Repair is a simple, inexpensive part (fuse, belt, switch)
- Brand new equivalent would cost $800+ and repair is under $200
